Getting married in a swimming pool – the speeches write themselves!
The whole day will be spent at Victoria Baths – the ceremony, wedding breakfast, and evening reception are all in different parts of the same building. You won't even need to step outside.
It's a really special venue that we hope you'll love as much as we do. Some of their volunteers will be running tours of the building between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast. It's a fascinating building that's been undergoing a slow and expensive renovation for the last 20 years. A bit rough around the edges, which is fitting.
To find out more about the place, see their website – it's well worth a look.
We'll be staying at Luther King House on the Saturday night. It's nothing fancy – just a cheap-and-cheerful hotel in a leafy area a mile south of Victoria Baths. It'll be nice to have our first post-wedding breakfast with anyone else who's staying there – so let us know if you will be.
If you call 0161 224 6404 and give them the code 144402, you should get the following discounted rates (all including breakfast and non-refundable):
Double or twin: £70 Fri / £85 Sat
Single: £55 Fri / £65 Sat
One of the closest hotels to Victoria Baths is the Travelodge on Upper Brook Street, which is about a 10-minute walk away. While they charge for parking, note that Hyde Grove (just behind the place) is unrestricted so you might get lucky.
Otherwise, there are MANY hotels in Manchester city centre, which is just a short Uber away. Why not treat yourself and stay somewhere swanky?!
The first step is getting to Manchester! Then, your best options are...
Ubers (or similar) are plentiful in Manchester. It should be about £5 from the city centre.
Victoria Baths is a 10-minute walk from the super-frequent 192 bus route, which stops just outside the back of Manchester Piccadilly (where the taxis are).
Get off at Plymouth Grove West then walk straight down Plymouth Grove West and you'll get there shortly.
Alternately, it's even closer to the 50 route, but that doesn't go from Piccadilly.
Manchester buses now operate a flat £2 fare – just tap your card or phone when you get on.
If you're driving, there's plenty of parking available – see below.
There is a small car park directly behind Victoria Baths.
However, if at all possible, please park on one of the side streets in front of the building, which are all unrestricted during weekends. They should be pretty empty as many of the students will be elsewhere for the summer.
It is possible to leave your car in the Victoria Baths car park overnight, but please let us know if you want to do this.
While the aforementioned buses will still be running, honestly, the best option to get home at the end of the night will be to call an Uber. It should be pretty easy to get wherever you need to be, assuming that surge pricing doesn't go crazy.
Unfortunately, the local area isn't all that nice. It's part of inner city Manchester and very much student-ville – a few of our friends lived right opposite the Baths when they were studying.
That said, it's safe enough to wander around – but better go west (towards the Manchester Royal Infirmary) than east (towards Ardwick).
If you're in need of somewhere to eat the night before, the famous Curry Mile is within walking distance, while Seoul Kimchi is a nice little Korean restaurant that we've used far too often as a post-A&E treat.
If you do have some time to explore Manchester, please do get in touch and we'll recommend some places to see, things to do, etc.
